Tire Costs and Cost Prevention for Cottrell Owners, Carhauler Fleets, and Truckers

Tire inflation systems are pretty essential. Based on Federal studies A few key points from this report to consider:

  • Tire-related costs are the single largest maintenance cost item for commercial vehicle fleet operators.
  • Fuel economy loss due to improper tire inflation is about 0.6% for typical TL and LTL operations.
  • Improper tire inflation is likely responsible for about one roadcall per year per tractor-trailer
  • For a typical TL or LTL operator, improper tire inflation increases the total operating costs by about $750 annually per tractor-trailer combination.
  • Most fleet maintenance departments ask operators to check tire pressures weekly. However, if operators only check tires twice a month, the total annual labor would be approximately 12 hours (0.5 hours/inspection × 24 inspections). At $25/hour, the cost would total $300 annually in tire inspection costs
  • Cost penalties for other types of fleets are similar and range from about $600 to $800.

Truck of the Month November 2011

    Good News For Cottrell Carhaulers....Really

As carhaulers and Cottrell Trailer owners we are a very select group of specialized truckers. We do face many of the same issues that the rest of the trucking industry faces along with a host of things unique to us. Regardless we bombarded day after day with negative news. So, in lieu of that I am constantly scouring the transportation news for good news. Its been harder and harder to find it lately but it is there.

    Truck orders are up 12%

Hah! This is undeniable evidence that someone, somewhere, is buying something from someone for some reason. How about that for a definition of capitalism. All kidding aside trucks are selling. In our office the rows of once full inventory are filled with gaps where carhauler trailers once sat before they were sold. This is good. This is like a blip on the economies heart monitor. After three years of economic upheaval we are still making it.

So how am I doing..isn’t it nice to hear good news?

Why Not Have a Pink Cottrell Trailer for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

There are a lot of charities. Even with this fact, The bright pink banners of the Susan Komen foundation stand out. I have seen tow trucks in bright pink. I have seen gigantic football players with pink shoes and pink towels strutting their passive masculinity on national television. As I am thrilled out the outpouring of support,I cannot help but think that the Cottrell Carhauler might be getting left out.

Think about the ad potential of a 80 ton carhauler sporting hot pink as it rolls down the road to deliver our cars. NO ONE will be able to miss out. The pink Cottrell car carrier will get the message out quick.

Unfortunately I could not find out so I did a mock up what a fictional Susan B. Komen carhauler might look like.

    Cottrell Chains For Car Haulers

Its a temptation every Cottrell owner has faced, pay for authentic Cottrell authorized parts or save a few dollars on imitations. I won't lie to you, I have been in the same boat on other products. The problem with Cottrell Carhauling parts is the authentic parts are designed to withstand certain levels of weight and force. They have been tested to work with Cottrell products. This testing and designation of basic quality standards protects the carhauler from product failure.

Chains are an area where you don't ever want to substitute. There are differences in the strength of off brand imported chains. The strength of imitation chains has been proven to be weaker. This puts the carhauler and their Cottrell car carrier at risk of injury or worse. Buy authentic Cottrell parts from an authorized Cottrell dealer.

Cominbation Fuel and Hydraulic Tank Saves Weight and Space

    East Coast Dealer Standard

Combination fuel and hydraulic tank on Western Star Lowmax/ Cottrell Combination
To a carhauler space = money. The less weight and more flexibility you can have on your trailer, the more you will probably make. East Coast Truck and Trailer was the first Cottrell dealer to use this specification on a Western Star Lowmax/ Cottrell Trailer. By combining the hydraulic tank and the fuel tank your Cottrell is 100 pounds lighter and you have 2 more inches of flexibility in the third position. This could be the difference between being able to load a more profitable vehicle or making sure your trailer is not overweight on the road.

The hydraulic tank can restrict the ramps in the 3rd position

If you remove the hydraulic tank you have 2 to 3 more inches of flexibility in
    the third position

East Coast Truck and Trailer will
combine hydraulic tank with the fuel tank on our Western Star Lowmax to reduce the trucks weight by 100 lbs

    Cottrell Smart Design: The toolbox

Since capacity is king to a carhauler any design features which allow for greater performance without increasing weight or height are important. The toolbox is in area where Cottrell smart design allows storage without increasing weight or height by having a separate unit. Cottrell puts the tool box in the decking. This allows it to be easily accessible with out getting in the way.

Space = Money when it comes to your Cottrell Autotransport

East Coast Dealer Exclusive: Combination fuel and hydraulic tank of Western Star Lowmax

That is a mouthful but its very simple. We specified our new Western Stars with a combination tank to give the carhauler more space in the third position. If the hydraulic tank is separate if can constrict the movement of the track making it harder to fill the carrier. It also adds an additional 100 pounds to  the carhaulers load. This design cuts your weight and gives you more space. To a carhauler space is money.

    Combination fuel tank/ hydraulic tank

The old style puts the tank behind the 3rd position and constricts the
    deck and adds weight

Without you gain 2 more inches of flexibility which can be critical in maximizing your load

    The Cottrell Gator Trailer

The push to have cheap fuel is changing how we look at energy. I read that fuel made up of alligator fat is a possible source for future vehicles. Sounds good to me. I don’t know if Cottrell, Peterbilt, or Western Star are going to adapt a gator fueled truck or car hauler. Think for a second though, wouldn’t a special model of a Cottrell Trailer based around the gator fuel be neat. Cottrell could give it one of those cool series name. Just like there is NextGen series, there would be the Gator Series. Maybe the number could be the  GXS-7 or something cool like that. It could be offered ain three or four different shades of green. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this idea, and I don’t that I am going to risk being hauled off by orderlies in white pants by pitching it to Mike Cottrell (I think that’s the founders name… I know I got the Cottrell part right) but it is a fun idea to think about.

    Cellphone Causes Truck Accident

NTSB says trucker in 11-fatality accident was on cellphone, urges ban on devices for commercial drivers

    Written by
    James R. Carroll | The Courier-Journal
WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board recommended Tuesday that drivers of commercial vehicles be banned from using cellphones, except in emergencies, after citing a cellphone call as the cause of a 2010 Kentucky accident that killed 11 people.

“We’re not here to be popular,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman, acknowledging the controversial nature of the recommendation.

She urged drivers to understand the dangers of cellphone use and texting.

“Changing behavior can start right now, for big-rig drivers and also for the rest of us,” Hersman said. “When you are at the wheel, driving safely should be your only focus. You owe it to yourself and all the people on the road you put at risk, as we so tragically saw at Munfordville.”

Commentary: I would be curious to see what percentage of truck accidents involve carhaulers or
carhauling trailers. I have not seen any cellphone related autotransport accident reports online but it would
still be interesting to see how it is impacting the car carrier industry.

Versatile High Side Cottrell Carhauler Trailer

Cottrell’s model CS-12LTA/B high side carhauler is a classic design and one of the most popular autotransports on the road. This car carrier is ideal for multiple stops and unloads but is also rugged enough for longer trips. This car hauler trailer works with a majority of Cottrell headrack. I have some more information and pictures below of the CS-12LTB. The "B" model of this carhauler offers longer decks as well as a carrying capacity of between 18,600 pounds and 19,600 pounds.
