FBI Shows Details Of Trucking Scam

I had briefly mentioned an incident before about a group of Canadian companies that were using sophisticated schemes to rip off Americans. I saw an article that showed the specific steps they were using to do this. According to the FBI:

The Canadian companies send over phony credentials like references, credit, and even tax documents to set up a line of credit.
The Canadian business places an order which will be delivered by a third party.
The materials are trucked into Canada.
The Canadian company does not pay.

Remember, in the Photoshop world any document can be faked. You need to know everything you can about your customers and creditors because it is so easy to fake it. Do not be fooled by pretty pictures or unverified documents because a lot of con artists want you to get sucked into the air of authority they try to emulate. Good News For Cottrell Carhaulers....Really

As carhaulers and Cottrell Trailer owners we are a very select group of specialized truckers. We do face many of the same issues that the rest of the trucking industry faces along with a host of things unique to us. Regardless we bombarded day after day with negative news. So, in lieu of that I am constantly scouring the transportation news for good news. Its been harder and harder to find it lately but it is there.

Truck orders are up 12%

Hah! This is undeniable evidence that someone, somewhere, is buying something from someone for some reason. How about that for a definition of capitalism. All kidding aside trucks are selling. In our office the rows of once full inventory are filled with gaps where carhauler trailers once sat before they were sold. This is good. This is like a blip on the economies heart monitor. After three years of economic upheaval we are still making it.

SERRA MESA – The driver of a big rig car hauler who got involved in a roll over crash Monday morning is still stuck inside the vehicle that fell on the side of the Southbound I-15, right across from the Walmart on Aero Drive.
According to the CHP report, the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Monday morning after the driver of the (carhauler) big rig was seen zig-zaging across all Southbound lanes of the I-15 near Aero Drive.
The big rig (carhauler) rolled over on the side of the road, landing on Murphy Canyon road, right across from the Walmart.

Drunk Carhauler (Truck) driver arrested

NEWELL - A Columbus man is being held in the Northern Regional Jail, Moundsville on $5,000 bond after his arrest for DUI with a carhauler

Deputy Scott Little of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office responded to C. Hackett Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge in Newell around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday after owners reported vehicles delivered to the dealership were damaged.
Little said after speaking with the driver and conducting a field sobriety test, he charged John F. Strohm II with DUI. He said Strohm had the odor of alcohol on his breath, and a blood-alcohol level of .179.

Strohm was still in the Northern Regional Jail on Thursday, Little said. The trucking company is based in Illinois.

"Hackett's would normally be closed about the time the driver arrived," Little said. "They had a good sales day, though, and they were still there doing paperwork."

Strohm was driving a Freightliner carhauler semi, which Little referred to as "an 80,000 pound missile" with the driver in an intoxicated state. "Not only did he drive an 80,000 pound vehicle while drunk, he also drove the four vehicles off the trailer."

Little said there were four vehicles on the trailer and at some point along Ohio Route 7, he "wrecks into a few things and just annihilates the vehicles. They were scratched and one had a broken window," Little said. "He's not sure what he hit, or where. We're still looking into that, because he wasn't able to tell us."

Strohm didn't think the business was open, and unloaded the vehicles, Little said. He said C. Hackett owners believe Strohm was not going to come into the business. He planned to leave the damaged vehicles in the lot, and drive away.

Commentary:

An 80ton Carhauler with a drunk driver sounds like a recipe for disaster. I dont know how the driver even got the carhauler there in one piece to begin with. A fully loaded carhauler is not aerodynamic and is not able to move very fast making the reaciton time of a drunk car-hauler driver dangerously slow..

There is probably not a carhauler or Cottrell owner in the United States who has not heard of Marcus Costa, a carhauler accused of second degree murder because his car hauler went out of control on the San Gabriel mountains and ended up killing two people. Costa claims it was brake failure coupled with no accessible runway to swerve his carhauler into. The State claims it was negligence and that he was warned by a firefighter that the mountains were way to steep for his 25 ton carhauler trailer.

I don’t know who is right. I do know that a 25 ton vehicle moving up a mountain is going to be difficult at best. Anything man made, with enough stress, is going to eventually fail against gravity. Also, the carhauler received a verbal warning by the fireman that the mountain was too steep and ignored it, even though the car haulers brakes had been inspected a few weeks earlier.

The real key is to plan your car carrier routes to avoid topography this difficult. Why even risk being in a situation was difficult as Autohauler Marcus Costa’s. Even a Cottrell Trailer, with all the technical innovations, is best kept on even ground.
