Oil Slides On The Post Sequester Economy...

Oil slid again. I am sure every Cottrell owner, carhauler, trucker, autohauler, etc is enjoying this. Oil  going down is good but the reason for it is not. Post sequester I have witnessed the economy hit the brakes whether it was merited or not. Now hold on, I do not mean the affluent economy of the stock market or the large international company that benefits by less US debt and increasing value of the dollar.

I am talking about our economy. You know the real economy. The one that surrounds buying and selling, job creation (or lack thereof) or the reality that 98% of the American Population faces. That economy is slowing.

So lower oil prices may be good, but they are not part of a good trend..

FBI Shows Details Of Trucking Scam

I had briefly mentioned an incident before about a group of Canadian companies that were using sophisticated schemes to rip off Americans. I saw an article that showed the specific steps they were using to do this. According to the FBI:

 

1.  The Canadian companies send over phony     credentials like references, credit, and even tax documents to set up a line of credit.
2. 
   The Canadian business places an order which will  be delivered by a third party.
3. 
   The materials are trucked into Canada.
4. 
   The Canadian company does not pay.

Remember, in the Photoshop world any document can be faked. You need to know everything you can about your customers and creditors because it is so easy to fake it. Do not be fooled by pretty pictures or unverified documents because a lot of con artists want you to get sucked into the air of authority they try to emulate. Solving The Trucker Shortage

I had grown tired of large companies railing on and on about the trucker shortage. Granted every area of the transportation world from long haul truckers to the Cottrell Autohaulers hauling cars to the Northeast have felt the impact of the driver shortage.

Even worse, the more specialized the driving, the harder it is to find qualified professionals. I know operating a Cottrell Trailer requires tremendous skill as any carhauler might tell you. I know this since my writing perspective is a company that services and sells Cottrell Trailers, on top of other trucks.

Well there were two competing schools of thought on how to fix the situation. One side said pay a lot more. Sounds good to me. The opposition to that is that we need to train more drivers. Also sounds reasonable except who is going to pay for it?

Well Celadon Trucking has another solution. They have created their own training facility for drivers. The facility will train hundreds of drivers and will add almost 200 drivers to the Celadon workforce. It also has a dormitory to house recruits during training.

The Looming Fiscal Cliff and What It Means To The Trucking industry.

I know of very few working people who have not heard the term “fiscal cliff”. The trucking industry is no different. The question is, what is the reaction of trucking companies and what are they doing to prepare. Well according to an article at Trucker.com

Not a lot

According to the article, a large number of trucking company owners and executives are waiting to see if we actually are going to end up going over that proverbial cliff. Demand for just about anything is down, as consumer income is way down.

You do not need market research to know that the economy has its challenges. One other thing to consider. We are not starting fresh on our economic cliff dive if we go. We have already been over one huge cliff in 2008 and really have not recovered.

What I think the real fear is what the fallout will be if we go into 2013 with

• higher taxes
• less revenue
• more expenses

Realistically, we need to address the problems that sent us over the first fiscal cliff which is lack of jobs and industry to employ people so they can spend money and stimulate the need for trucking.

The current plan of political infighting, endless Chinese exports, and decreasing wages will send us over another financial cliff inevitably whether we solve the tax debate or not...

Changes For The CSA On The Way?

I pulled an article from Overdrive Online that goes over the new CSA adjustments to the scoring system. I am no going into the full detail of the proposed changes but here are a few significant alterations:

1. The CSA system will show if a suspension is safety or non safety related
2. No more speeding violations in 5 miles or less per hour range
3. Changes in the categorization of cargo/ securement violations including HAZMAT

Overall, not major changes but at least the process is there to begin evaluating..and improving the CSA system

A Natural Gas Cottrell Trailer...Not Quite Yet

I am still yet to see any program coming down the pike for natural gas powered carhaulers or Cottrell Trailers...but I know it will be here eventually. I am reading about 5 large trucking companies that are starting natural gas programs. One huge reason for this is that there is a larger and larger network of natural gas refueling stations. Potentially this will allow more and more companies to utilize natural gas in their cottrell trailers.
