A Natural Gas Cottrell Trailer...Not Quite Yet

Natural Gas Powered Cottrell Trailers

I am still yet to see any program coming down the pike for natural gas powered carhaulers or Cottrell Trailers...but I know it will be here eventually. I am reading about 5 large trucking companies that are starting natural gas programs. One huge reason for this is that there is a larger and larger network of natural gas refueling stations. Potentially this will allow more and more companies to utilize natural gas in their cottrell trailers.

The five companies using natural gas are:

  1. Saddle Creek Logistics Services,Lakeland, FL
  2. Premier Transportation, Atlanta, GA
  3. Hoopes Turf Farm, Transport Division, Ulysses, PA
  4. Lily Transportation Corp., Needham, MA
  5. Lancaster Foods, Jessup, MD

One Way To Prepare For High Diesel Prices

 What is 'Diesel Natural Gas'
Now you're talking. According to Trucking News, Peake fuel solutions has a product that will allow the ISX15 Cummins Engine to run a mixed fuel cocktail of Liquid Natural Gas or Compressed Natural Gas with diesel while still allowing a truck to go back to 100% diesel. The system does require a conversion kit but the potential savings and flexibility far outweigh the cost. With a fuel price future that is very very uncertain this can protect you from getting overwhelmed by high diesel prices

A New Idea That Could Lower The Fuel Cost Of Hauling Your Cottrell Trailer

Cottrell Trailer for Sale
One of the biggest, if not the biggest costs associated with hauling your Cottrell Trailer is the price of fuel. Since a Cottrell Trailer powertrain determines fuel economy, its fuel efficiency is at the mercy of the major truck manufacturers.

The problem on everyone's mind is:

  1. How expensive will it get to operate my Cottrell Trailer?
  2. How high will fuel go?
  3. What are the alternatives?
The obvious answer is alternate fuel, very likely liquid natural gas, which is abundant in North America.
The question then is:

What steps do we need to take to make it available to masses of truckers who are watching their profits getting devoured by the fuel needed to push their Cottrell Trailer down the road?

Well one place where a plan is being proposed is in the Statehouse of Pennsylvania. According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette State Senator Stan Saylor (say that fast five times) wants to give trucking businesses state financial incentives to convert their trucks to use natural gas. To fund the project, Saylor wants to use money from Pennsylvania's Clean Air Fund.

As simple as this seems, a lot has happened with these two simple actions:

1. A whole string of price increases to the consumer are mitigated
2. The amount of pollution in the air is greatly reduced

Think about the chain of events that go into effect with these two benefits

  1. Trucking companies with cheaper fuel do not have to add price increases to their goods
  2. This means stores do not have to increase their prices to cover transportation cost increases

But wait there's more....

  • Lower fuel prices on gas forces traditional fuel prices to go down since demand is decreasing
  • This means cheaper fuel for consumers as well
  • The air is going to be cleaner when trucks use natural gas
  • More natural gas fuel pumps will pop up as demand for it increases by trucks
  • As this happens more manufacturers will make natural gas hybrid cars since people will be able to get the fuel conveniently
  • This lowers the price of gasoline further since people now have a CHOICE

The impact of a few tax incentives can do a whole lot of good if they are applied correctly. I hope that the cost of running your Cottrell trailer goes down as more fuel choices develop..

UPDATE

From KY3.com

Excellent article about the impact fuel is having on the industy. Both for carhaulers and Cottrell owners alike (as part of the larger group of truckers). Fuel is often the determinant of your profit margin since it is a variable cost. At some point, financial stress will have to be relieved or the cost of everything could potentially skyrocket...
